We are in this together, literally.
On co-regulation origins, what birth ruptures, and the sentient reach that lives within every body.
I’m here to share something with you. Something has moved in the framework.
Organic Intimacy Theory names how intimacy is built, expressed, and experienced somatically across a lifetime. The posts before this one have described that arc. What has come forward is not a correction of those posts. It is the substrate underneath them, reaching further back than I had named.
This developmental addition is in that ground.
Here is where it began.
There is a significant and growing body of work on how the body reads living environments, the animacy, presence, and the subtle registers the somatic system responds to beneath conscious awareness. The research has not yet made a theoretical claim about what it all points toward. But it is pointing somewhere.
In my office, the space has been intentionally curated to bring “the outside” inside. I honor a variety of plant life and geological specimens with a grateful home. It isn’t for everyone, but the bodies sharing space in my office were reading the relational field, like the regulated nervous system I bring, the living things in the space, the quality of presence the room holds and responding to that reading as regulatory.
Yes, hopefully reading safety.
AND, Reading sentience.
That observation opened a question. If sentience has this particular effect on the somatic system, why does it land so deep, and where does the body first learn to read for it?
The answer reached further back than I expected.
Your body was inside another body for almost a year. Not next to it. Inside of it.
The maternal body is a regulatory environment. Her heart rate, breath, cortisol, voice, acoustic vibrational signature, these were not signals being transmitted to you, they were the conditions your nervous system was being formed inside of. The research on maternal-fetal autonomic coupling is substantial; the developmental claim underneath it has not been made. The first co-regulatory relationship of your life was not your first relationship after birth. It is the substance you were in before you were born.
You did not enter co-regulation. You were built inside of it.
Birth is not the first somatic event. Birth is the rupture of the first somatic condition.
Before you were born, your body was inside another body’s regulatory field. Near its heartbeat. In expansive breath. With their autonomic state. These were not received as signals across a channel. It is the environment the body was grown inside of.
Birth changed this, making two bodies where there had been one continuous field, and what was inside became outside. The field was still there, the same body, the same nervous system, but your body’s relationship to it had been fundamentally reorganized. Co-regulation now had to cross a distance that had not existed.
This is the first separation. The first time the body knew the field as something to reach for rather than something to be inside of.
The relational field reveals its origin story. Every human body was inside the field, every human body was separated from the field. This universal truth might seem obvious. Just wait. The following posts will address this thoroughly.
The somatic reaching you have done your whole life toward contact, toward closeness, toward the specific quality of another nervous system present, that reaching belongs to the human condition. Every body reaches because every body was once inside the field and was separated from it. What has been operating in you without a name is what operates in every human body.
This does not mean the body is in constant deficit when it is alone. Not even a little.
The body reaches toward co-regulation when it reaches. The body rests in its somatic Self when it rests. Both are true. The rupture shaped the reach; it did not make the reach continuous.
There is great expansion available and content in alone time. The quiet is not a consolation prize. The company you keep with yourself is its own intimacy, intimacy with the self, which the framework has always named as foundational. The reaching is real. The solitude is also real. The framework holds both without collapsing one into the other.
This is an invitation to what you have been somatically knowing.
